Below, Ian shares some of his atelier projects and talks about his design and making processes.

‘SEALIFE’ APPLIQUÉ

project - CUSHIONS FOR EXTERIOR OR INTERIOR

Working on a range of contemporary images applied in a traditional method, to a fabric background.

Here I’ve chosen starfish and a part view of an octopus and placed them asymmetrically and spaciously on a plain background.

The added texture of the appliqué makes a change from printing, adding a respectful ‘rustic’ feel to a contemporary style.

Any colour combination is possible, as is the choice of material or images.

‘WHITE ON WHITE’ COLLECTION

project – CONTEMPORARY WHITE ‘RUSTIC’ LINEN COVERS

A beautiful thick linen, in this case I’ve chosen white, that lends itself perfectly to playing with layers, inserts of colour and fringing that fit into any modern interior, especially where white on white is the theme. Would look great scattered among plain whites to give them a little lift. A little ‘arty’ touch.

CHINTZ ?

project – CLASSIC PRINTED LINEN COVERS

This is a very classical pattern called ‘Cashmiri, based early ‘chintz’ fabrics and designs brought in from the Far East in the early 18th century 

This client asked for three colourways with strongly coloured piping to bring them into a more contemporary setting. Perfect for ‘mix and match’

BEACH OR CABIN BAGS

Project – WATER AND SUN RESISTANT BAGS

Keeping it simple I’ve designed not only plain coloured bags that look great with an embroidered logo, name whatever, but also a range I call ‘Horizon’ and are made of two complimentary colours.

This started out as a solution to cabin bags on yachts where wet towels etc were a problem,
and also advertising for the yacht when used onshore.
